Finally we arrive at our midway point: St. Louis! Home of Anita Blake, necromancer, zombie raiser, vampire hunter, and polyamorous ball buster. I have read the Anita Blake novels cover to cover from the first entry, Guilty Pleasures, to the most recent entry from last month, the 19th novel, Bullet. I have fallen out of love with Anita, but I'm glad I read the novels. I will keep reading them, because I know her now, so they own me. They are set in a fictional St. Louis, one where vampires have revealed themselves and run various naughty businesses. I never thought I'd ever visit this place, but since we're here, I'm taking in Anita's hunting grounds. It's humid, rainy, hot and there's lots of brick. I've been going through the West, and now we're finally in what's called The Gateway to the West, so we're starting to see some different landscapes. Missouri is beautiful and green.
Also, my good friend Justine just moved here last week for a new job and we got to be her first house guests. She made us a lovely meal, one of the first home-cooked meals in weeks, and it was delicious. We had cocktails, our dogs hung out together, we had fun conversation, and we got away from the road trip for a few hours. We made it here in record time and got to a lovely hotel, our first nice hotel of the trip. A great mid-way stop.
I look forward to tommorrow: Pittsburgh! Finally we'll be in Pennsylvania. So close!
