Halloween Memories

I have always loved Halloween. I don't know why, but ever since I was very small, I enjoyed the theatricality and the scariness of this holiday. I love scary stories, and until I saw Paranormal Activity a few weeks ago, I never had bad dreams or stayed up late worrying about movie creatures. Seriously, that movie was frightening. I had a similar fright with Blair Witch Project, but as long as I stay away from nature (which is what I do anyway), the witch ghost can't get me. Demons who attach themselves to suburbanite students? Consider me scared.

Anyway, my mom always encouraged my love of this holiday. Cubans don't really celebrate Halloween (I would imagine it was especially frowned upon after the Revolution), so her parents never really got into it, but they allowed her and her siblings to dress up. There aren't a lot of pictures of their costumes, partly I think, due to the fact that my grandparents didn't think it was important to record. But you can kind of tell that my mom liked dressing up from other elements of the historical record. Here she is wearing my grandmother's wig for laughs:

P.S. I love wigs! I have four of them and I only bought one for Halloween purposes!

Of course, when I was born, everything changed. Now there was a little doll to dress up for Halloween! How fun! I was the first baby of the family and I suppose, the first American in the family. My mom tried to make sure Thanksgiving was American style (a no rice and beans mantra was apparently needed) and she made sure I had costumes if I wanted. For every picture that doesn't exist from my mom's Halloweens, there are about 5 from mine and my brothers'.

She says that I often created costumes and did fun makeup faces when it wasn't even Halloween.
I don't remember that really, but I do remember her telling me whenever I did something weird that I was very "creative." My dad fully encouraged the holiday, though I think for him it must have been tough. His father died in a tragic explosion on October 31st when he was a kid in Cuba. I can't imagine coming to a new country after that kind of loss only to find that the anniversary of his death is a death celebration. He never really talked about it and I don't know if he and his brothers ever trick-or-treated.

But my brothers and I did. We sometimes came back from a trip around the block and put on another costume and went out twice. Greedy little jerks, we were. And the amount of candy was totally ridiculous. I'm surprised we were allowed to keep it all, but I think my mom knew us well enough to know that come December, she'd see most of it in the trash. Except for my brother Lui, who I bet still keeps a candy drawer full to the brim.

Last year's Halloween celebration was not so hot. M. had just gotten laid off. I had a vampire costume planned, but I did a lackluster job of it because I felt, well, lacking in luster. M. went out with me anyway, because he knows I love the holiday. His costume, though planned in advance, worked perfectly for his mood:
Frank the bunny from Donny Darko allowed him to hide behind a mask. It also had a small hole in the mouth perfect for a cocktail straw. This year's celebration is going to be better, but it has been such a tough year. I didn't really do much decorating. I'm actually looking forward to next year's holiday, really. I plan on having a party, I think, in our new apartment. But tonight, we will go out and we have costumes and we will drink and be merry. The neighborhood kids love our dog Radley, so we'll dress him up too and take a walk around the block while they are out trick-or-treating. He loves wearing stuff, so I'm sure he'll be the happiest dog ever.

I keep thinking of my future, full of possibility. I know there is a lot left to do and a lot I want to accomplish here, but I am so excited about moving that I wish it was happening sooner. Remember my 2009 goals/resolutions? I had called them collectively "Go 2009." Well, it's still called that, but it's more like "Go already 2009." 2010 awaits!

Hope you all have fun Halloweens and that none of you are wearing "sexy" versions of regular costumes.

Lunch Break

I'm on my lunch break. Writing is going better today, so I'm not so worried. Anywayz...

If you've seen the Coraline movie, you know buttons for eyes is super creepy (hell, I would hope you think it's creepy even if you haven't seen the movie). Anyway, the official website lets you button your own eyes! Like the Simpsonizer, you upload your picture and then pick which buttons look best. Each button has a description if you move your cursor over them.

Do it! The other mother commands you.

Valentine's Day

I started today off great, with a present! My favorite way, actually. M. got me the first season of Veronica Mars, because he knows me so well. And he gave me this awesome Valentine's day card:
I went to Best Buy because our digital camera is taking a dirt nap. It got a strawberry martini spilled on it the night before our wedding at the drunky party we threw at the Venetian. Technically, M spilled the drink on the camera. I think it is pretty awesome that it lasted over 8 months! The lens cover is automatic, and it would get stuck sometimes, but that was the only thing really wrong with it until recently, when it wouldn't write to the card and some pictures were much too blurry. So, off to replace her with a new Sony Cyber-Shot. Not my dream Canon EOS Rebel, but a nice in between. More megapixels, better zoom, and I can attach lenses and filters to this one, which makes it a great compromise between the tiny point and shoot and the cumbersome digital SLR. Waiting for the batteries to charge up is excruciating!!

We have old people plans this year, as we have the past few years. We're going to avoid the whole dinner reservation craziness and just have a nice dinner at home. Being together at home and enjoying it is really what a relationship is all about for me, so I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

What else is new.....I saw Coraline yesterday with my friend Brande. I am so impressed by the stop-motion animation stuff. It looks absolutely amazing. Backgrounds are moving in a natural way behind the characters. I recommend it highly. Also, Coraline has the exact same hair I wanted when I was 15!

I asked my mom if I could dye my hair blue and she just wouldn't have it at all. This was totally my mental picture of what it would look like. But, alas, even if I did that, you probably wouldn't have been able to tell. My hair is dark brown. It was a stupid thing to argue over, but really, it's just hair. If I had the chance to do it over again, I probably would have done it without asking. I didn't figure out that little trick until late. She tried to be cool about it and bought me black hair dye as a consolation prize, at least.

Has anyone seen Dollhouse, the new Joss Whedon vehicle starring Eliza Dushku (aka Faith, aka the hottest woman in the world)? What do you think? We TiVo'd it and are going to watch it tonight.

P.S. Thanks to Tiny Heat for the shout out!

nerd art.

I said I wanted to finish before the semester started, and damn if I didn't get just under the wire. Here's my retablo, a dia de los muertos diarama of my family in time for the fall festivities. Traditionally, the Mexican Day of the Dead is a day to remember those who have died in celebration, not mourning. It coincides with All Souls and All Saints days on the Catholic calendar. There is a costuming tradition as well, with people dressing up as elaborate skeletons. That's my inspiration, basically.

This is my family celebrating in song, with M. and I in the center as bride and groom. My step-dad Miguel is in front in the wheelchair (he plays the trumpet in real life). My Brothers and mom are behind me. M.'s brother is in front on guitar, and his parents are behind him. Our pets are next to us (also skeletons!) Some of the decor are loteria card pieces, but a lot of it is little pieces of flair and clay things that I made.

Now, I have never really done clay modeling, but my core belief system ("I can totally do that") was challenged, and so I went to the place all researchers go--Google. Google has all kinds of sites aimed at showing you how to create metal armatures and foil pieces for the basic body of your clay figure. Now, the quality is kind of not-so-hot, because my abilities are not well formed, but I kind of like the home-made quality of it. I may do more skeletons in a bit larger scale, so that the skulls can be a little more detailed. Maybe in a bas relief frame-like format so that they don't have to be completely three dimensional.

Check out my points-friendly meal of low-fat chili and a chicken taco! My own special chili recipe was already low enough in fat to qualify as a 4 point meal. The trick is using just 1/2 a pound 4% fat lean ground beef and lots of veggies with red beans. Bulking up with veggies is my new way of getting healthy. I have lost some weight with the Weight Watchers thing, but that isn't as rewarding as the feeling of knowing what I'm actually putting in my body. It's much easier to say no to Cold Stone when I know that it would be like a third of the food (calorie-wise) I should be eating for the day. And it gets me cooking more, which is nice, even though the lack of air conditioning makes it a chore sometimes. Luckily my sweet husband does the dishes when I cook, so I can at least cool down after the meal. Can't wait for the cool down in weather. I miss my sweaters!

ooh, I almost forgot to mention, my weird "freak magnet" rears its head again. I posted a pic of my dog on Flickr. He loves when I do laundry and the other day, he hopped right on the bed to put his face right into my folded underwear. So naturally, I took a picture and posted it. I didn't even use the word "underwear" in the description, and yet I got a new "contact" who thinks my photo is a "favorite" and he commented on my photo in order to tell me "looks like someone likes the Victoria's Secret cotton collection." How could you not go take a look at this person's photo site, right? I expected a total grody dude with booby pictures or pictures of himself at "the river" wearing a beer hat. Well, hold your horses, because it's a tranny-one that only takes pictures of himself from behind in satin granny panties from waist to knee. He's a panty-fetish tranny who loves telling people things they already know about their underwear. As Eddie Izzard would say, "weirdo transvestite." And this is only second in my tranny freak magnet lifetime moments. I got hit on at a club by Joan Crawford. Not young starlet Joan, but old-ass Mommy Dearest Joan Crawford, with the white fur hat and melty face. She said, "you going home alone tonight?" in a gravely voice. Maybe I need new perfume....
